Incorrect. Half of nodes are based on character/champion level, half of nodes are based on skill point investment in the first crafting passive for that line. A level 50 character with 10/10 in the metalworking passive on an account with >= 160 champion points will always see rubedite ore.
After this Ore refinement I refined Ash Wood, and I did get a lot back in those + 140 pieces. I never experienced having nothing with 120 pieces refining raw Ore. In most instances, refining will get you more in value than selling. Where it's better to sell the raw is platinum dust, rubedite ore, ruby ash, and some of the level 1 mats.

Dreugh Wax sells for 3,000+ gold per Wax and you need 8 to improve a piece of gear; that's 24,000+ gold to improve one piece of gear. Still, even though it's expensive, I agree that buying it is the best way. Refining raw materials and relying on chance won't net you a lot of Wax unless you refine stacks and stacks.

High iron ore can only be obtained by players of a certain level (1525) or with a certain blacksmithing skill (one point into the first passive). Most players have maxed out blacksmithing so they get rubedite, or they haven't worked on it at all so they get iron. To know if your price is fair, look at other ores (except rubedite).

The way i make most of my gold is farming rubedite and vile mansion. Farm vile mansion just farming for an hour i get about 15k then i go farm rubedite ore i refine it any temps i may get from it i sell them and then sell the ingots in the guild store.
